Wildlife Sites Near Chennai
Mudumalai Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
Spread in area of 320 sq km, the Mudumalai Sanctuary is located about 16 Km
from Gudalur in Tamil Nadu. The major attractions here are - Wild Elephant,
Gaur, Deer. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats, Mudumalai (the ancient
hills) is made most attractive wildlife reserve because it is wrapped in
thick mixed and moist deciduous forests. Moyar River, which separates
Mudumalai from Bandipur runs through the Park following its course runs the
Mysore-Ooty highway. The reserve provides some diverse habitats. The wild
elephant, gaur, deer and primates like the bonnet macaque and langurs all
inhabit the Park. The predators include the tiger, leopard and the dhole -
the Asiatic wild dog, that hunts in packs. The predators of the skies are
the crested hawk eagle and the crested serpent eagle that can be seen
circling above.
Kumarakom
National Park, Tamil Nadu
Spead in an area of 14 acres of land, the Kumarakom National Park harbours
birds like - the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck, as
well as the migratory Siberian cranes. Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers,
wood beetle, and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory
seasons.
Thattekad
National Park, Tamil Nadu
Around 210 species of birds have been identified here so far. Birds like -
Indian Roller, Cuckoo, Common snipe, Crow pheasant, Jungle Nightjar, Kite,
Grey Drongo, Malabar Trogon, Woodpecker, Large pied wagtail, Baya sparrow,
Grey jungle fowl, Indian hill myna, Robin, Jungle babbler and darter are
found here.
Periyar
National Park, Kerala
Situated in the south India state of Kerala, Periyar National Park is home
to diverse range of wildlife. The animals you will find here are Elephants,
Tigers, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian
Wild Dog. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers in the Periyar national
Park. Four species of primates found at Periyar are - the rare lion-tailed
macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also
inhabits the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely seen here. The birdlife
includes - Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and
racket-tailed Drongoes. Another attraction in Periyar is the Periyar Lake.
