Bandipur
National Parks, Karnataka
Located in the state of Karnataka, the Bandipur National Park is spread in
area of 874 sq km. Bandipur National Park, with its open grassy woodland,
lies to the south of the Kabini River is one of the finest habitats of the
Asian elephant. Drained by the Moyar River, its open forest makes it easy
for visitors to see the elephant and gaur in natural surroundings.
Nagarhole
National Park, Karnataka
Location in Karnataka, the Nagarhole National Park is in an area of 643.39
sq km. At Nagarhole there are excellent facilities for viewing wildlife and
large groups of gaur, elephant, sambar, chital and even the occasional tiger
or leopard are seen. Among other mammals are the muntjac, the tiny mouse
deer, wild boar, pangolin, giant squirrel, slender loris, langurs and
macaques. The Park has about 250 species of birds and the Malabar trogan,
the Malabar Herd of elephants pied hornbill, the great black woodpecker, the
Indian pitta and the green imperial pigeon are part of its avian variety.
Lesser cats like the jungle cat, leopard cat and rusty spotted cat are also
resident species.
The Nagarjunasagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Andhra Pradesh
About 29 km from Macherla, the Nagarjunasagar Wildlife Sanctuary, the
largest of India's Tiger Reserves is in an area of 3568 sq km. The terrain
is rough and serpentine gorges slice through the Mallamalai hills. Adjoining
the reserve is the large reservoir of the Nagarjunasagar Dam on the River
Krishna. The dry deciduous forests with scrub and bamboo thickets are home
to a range of animals from the tiger and leopard at the top of the food
chain, to deer, sloth bear, hyena, jungle cat, palm civet, bonnet macaque
and pangolin.
Periyar
National Park, Kerala
Situated in the south India state of Kerala, Periyar National Park is home
to diverse range of wildlife. The animals you will find here are Elephants,
Tigers, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian
Wild Dog. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers in the Periyar national
Park. Four species of primates found at Periyar are - the rare lion-tailed
macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also
inhabits the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely seen here. The birdlife
includes - Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and
racket-tailed Drongoes. Another attraction in Periyar is the Periyar Lake.
Mudumalai Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
Spread in area of 320 sq km, the Mudumalai Sanctuary is located about 16 Km
from Gudalur in Tamil Nadu. The major attractions here are - Wild Elephant,
Gaur, Deer. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats, Mudumalai (the ancient
hills) is made most attractive wildlife reserve because it is wrapped in
thick mixed and moist deciduous forests. Moyar River, which separates
Mudumalai from Bandipur runs through the Park following its course runs the
Mysore-Ooty highway. The reserve provides some diverse habitats. The wild
elephant, gaur, deer and primates like the bonnet macaque and langurs all
inhabit the Park. The predators include the tiger, leopard and the dhole -
the Asiatic wild dog, that hunts in packs. The predators of the skies are
the crested hawk eagle and the crested serpent eagle that can be seen
circling above.
